Dedicated DMU business open day on festival line-up
Leicester Business Festival (LBF) takes place from 7 to 18 November 2022 and is the largest of its kind in the region.
As part of this exciting fortnight of 80 free business events, on Friday 11 November - DMU will open its doors to offer insights to businesses. Normally, open days are for new students and their parents but during Leicester Business Festival DMU will host an open day especially for the business community.
The award-winning city centre campus is home to cutting-edge facilities which can be used by businesses working across a variety of sectors from digital healthcare to pharmaceutical manufacturing, green energy and sustainable textiles.
The DMU Day will be based at the Innovation Centre in Bonners Lane, which is home to the new Barclays Eagle Lab, the first in the East Midlands. Support is available for companies through Eagle Labs which aims to be a part of the Leicester entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Rob Ricketts, DMUs Regional Business Development Manager, said: “We came up with a ‘DMU Day’ because we realised that people walk past DMU all the time, but they probably do not realise the superb facilities we have here, which business can have access to.
“We have worked with teams across the university to put on a series of events which showcase the expertise we have here alongside some of our incredible equipment and resources, which we think will really appeal to businesses in Leicester.”
One hour interactive tours will be available to book on to. Staff, students and academics from the university will be on hand to showcase start-up support, product development, research and training opportunities across four faculties;
Art, Design and Humanities: Test and develop new products, try out new 3D scanning technology. Visit the workshops and take a tour of the Design Crafts studios. See why companies around the world work with DMU on sustainable textiles technology, reducing waste and ‘slow fashion’ principles.
Computing, Engineering and Media: DMU’s Cyber Security Institute – rated Gold by the National Cyber Security Centre – helps companies of all sizes be aware of and deal with security threats. Take a tour of the cyber labs and meet the team, and see how easy it can be to gain key information on your company. Leicester Media School studios will be open to visit with the chance to try being a TV presenter. The green energy centre will also be available where you can find out about the latest research into sustainable energy.
Health and Life Sciences: Health and Life Sciences (HLS) academics are at the forefront of digital healthcare innovation. Visit these facilities, talk to experts about current projects and visit the new £2million clinical skills suites, which are used to deliver training to nursing, midwifery and medical students and apprentices.
Business and Law: Meet academics who work with SMEs to support leadership development, managing change and research the new challenges that post-Covid working has unearthed. Take a tour of the Leicester Castle Business School, based in historic Leicester Castle’s Great Hall.
Rob continues: “We have been a proud supporter and headline partner of Leicester Business Festival for the last five years and this has enabled us to collaborate with businesses to embed research, test and launch new programmes that benefit businesses, students and the community.
“One of the most recent impacts emerging from the festival is the Leicester Future Leaders programme, which developed from an event in 2019 highlighting the lack of diversity in management in organisations across the city. This programme has created a toolkit that helps businesses improve diversity and inclusion. Launched a new accelerator programme to support graduates into work in Leicester and won a national award.
“We look forward to seeing what could emerge from the connections made at LBF 2022.”
As well as the open day, DMU are also putting on a number of events during the festival fortnight to equip businesses with skills in digital marketing, tackling health inequalities, net zero, business growth and attracting talent into the workforce.
