Education & Skills

This sector provides 45,900 jobs here which link to the many schools, academies, colleges local universities.

The area benefits from a strong Further Education (FE) sector, along with a good choice of schools and private training providers.

In Higher Education, Leicester and Leicestershire is fortunate to be served by three excellent universities: De Montfort, the University of Leicester and Loughborough University – each of which have their own globally-renowned specialisms. Combined, the Universities bring 55,000 students into the region at any one time and provide the local economy with 15,000 new skilled graduates every year.

As well as attracting thousands of domestic and foreign students into the area, each university has comprehensive research and development capabilities for businesses that wish to tap into the first-rate facilities or academic support on offer. Academia and industry engagement programmes are available in widespread subjects.

There is currently an aspiration - particularly by De Montfort University to forge stronger, on-going relationships with businesses in the region to improve graduate retention. The University recognises what a massive impact retaining the knowledge and expertise of skilled and qualified students will have on the local economy and is maximising the LBF as a route to drive up business engagement.

Pre-higher and further education, an Enterprise Adviser network was set up by the Careers & Enterprise Company and is delivered by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP). This initiative aims to inspire and prepare young people for the world of work, by linking business/employer volunteers with local schools and colleges. The network will help simplify engagement between schools, colleges and employers and stimulate more employer engagement where required.
